ENGL 106Y: Freshmen Composition Online (2019)
- The professor sends weekly emails outlining the objectives of the following week and what is expected of us as students. These are a good reminder to start off the week and he clearly lists what needs to be done which serves as a "checklist" for how I can distribute my work that week.
- The professor is overall organized on Blackboard and responds quickly to emails.
- The instructor does a great job and providing resources, prompts, and instructions for assignments. If something is unclear, I feel like I can communicate my concerns and questions and be sure that he will help me resolve them. The videos that he created throughout the semester were effective and helped me with understanding assignments.
- Communication between him and the students is very good
- As stated previously, the weekly update emails were very beneficial. It made me feel as if I was part of the class and still had frequent communication with my professor even though we never met face to face. He is also very helpful in responding to emails. With it being entirely online, some the objectives of the assignments are a little fuzzy. However, I emailed the professor almost every time before an assignment to gauge my understanding of the objectives. He always made time to look at my drafts and provide feedback prior to the deadline (even though he would be reviewing my turned in draft a few days later). It helped me to better understand the assignments and create a stronger relationship with the professor.
- I think professor Long's explanation on rhetorical analysis is perfect and should be explained in the same way for classes to come.
- He makes the class fun. He tends to be lenient, open-minded and always open for suggestions. He blends in with students and understands stuff from our perspective. His constant jokes keep the atmosphere light, fun and interesting.
- He makes everyone in the class feel very comfortable, and he is very approachable and really does want to help you improve.
- He is good at explaining assignment thoroughly and gives really good feedback on my papers to help me become a better writer.
- He cares about all of his students and gives great feedback. 6 Amazing teacher, encourages me to write.
- Alex is a great guy, and took English, a subject I dislike and make it entertaining and fun. Thank you, and congratulations, Alex!
- He is very relaxed and understands the stress of the students and is willing to work with them. He is realistic about the course and gives good explanations and expectations of the course. He also makes it very easy for the students to keep up with the work load and feel as though they can come to him if there are any problems.
- Connects with the students.
- Communication to his students is amazing. he is someone that i look up to as not only a teachers but as a person as well. he showed us the ways of writing good English papers and what to do with them.
- Very clear and does a great job just making the class comfortable and still learn.
- My professor is super cool and very easy to approach with questions. He is very flexible with deadlines and very helpful. Fantastic teacher!
- Alex is funny, which reduces the pressure from class. And he's tolerant.
- Alex had high expectations for our writing but taught the class in an informal matter. It always felt like we were coming here for a discussion with the same goals in mind instead of us being talked down to. I felt like we were all on the same level and it made it really easy to approach him for questions or any help we needed.
- He is very good at explaining what he wants in an assignment
- Overall a chill class makes sure not to put too much stress on his students, much appreciated.
- My instructor has done a good job of relating to the class as a whole and making the learning environment fun and useful. I enjoyed this class.
- I really appreciate that Alex gave in-line comments on all the assignments. Unfortunately, I did not know that he did this till late in the semester. I can only feel bad that he gave all that effort toward suggesting improvements my work, and I did not utilize it. Overall, Alex did a great job as an ENGL 106 instructor.
- Everything basically. Good communication, workload, time management. This class provided the perfect balance of challenge to time commitment. Keep doing what your doing.
- As an international transfer student in his junior year, one thing that benefited me the most, is that Alex is very understanding of the different responsibilities/difficulties that a student has outside of this course. His understanding, encouragement, and patience regarding student life allowed me to manage my time efficiently. Thanks to how clear the objectives of the given assignments are and how concise and goal-oriented the lectures are, it allowed me to successfully get certified as a lifeguard and get hired by Purdue full time, it allowed me to acquire an engineering certificate that led to me securing an internship in Korea next summer, and it also led to me scoring three more A's in other courses. I sincerely thank him for keeping me on track and motivated in and out of courses especially during our 1 to 1 conferences, as it helped me achieve one of my most productive semester ever all while sharpening my writing skills. I am very grateful that he happened to be my instructor, and I wish him nothing but the best!
- Alex is always flexible with deadlines because he knows that we all have other courses as well. and all the assignments we receive have purpose, there is no busy work . And finally everything that is expected of us is clearly expressed to us.
- You're awesome. Always bring interesting thoughts to the talks. Really connect with the students. Very relaxed and "chill" about the class, makes it a lot more enjoyable. Honestly, keep up the good work.
- The sample papers for the assignments really help in getting an idea of what is expected from the papers.
- The film papers are a good idea and allowing students to watch the movie at home is too. It's difficult for me to watch the movie on a monday night so I usually watch it on Sunday afternoon when I have time so I am glad we aren't forced to attend the showing.
- Really flexible with parts of the class, like how we were allowed to watch the movies at home. Flexible with due dates and how we were allowed to have makeup quizzes at the end. Really knowledgable about the subject and makes class pretty interesting.
- I think you were able to build a good rapport with the class. I really liked the discussions we had about the movies, it was interesting to hear other people's views.
- I think Alex was a great instructor! He's extremely relaxed and easy going which made the class very enjoyable. He's young like the rest of us and was very relatable. He knows his stuff about movies which helped me open my eyes and think a lot more about what is going on when I'm watching a movie.
- I enjoyed this class a lot i liked the format of the class
- His enthusiasm is incredible and is very personable! Amazing instructor!!
- Alex was great. He didn't take himself to seriously but was able to establish that his knowledge was very extensive. Everyday was something new that i looked forward to discussing.
- Great guy, humble instruction style makes participation easy. Main reason the in-class discussions were bearable. 10/10 would be taught by again
- Does a great job in encouraging us to express ourselves and to think outside the box.
- Awesome TA. It made me happy to know that he will become a professor. Universities need more Professors like Alex with his creative and open style of teaching.
- Allowing us enough time to get papers and exams turned in. Trying to pick at our brains when possible
- Alex is awesome. He is very smart and gives me a new way of thinking about film.
- Alex is an awesome instructor, who makes class enjoyable and much more open for students' opinions on the topics that we discuss in class.
